It has been 7 months and 23 days since Pitt basketball last took the court for a meaningful game.  That is 237 long, painful, basketball free days...days where we thought about nothing but Butler and Matt Howard flopping like a fish out of water.

Heartbreaking.  So goes the life of a Pitt fan.

But today starts a new season.  Pitt's record is now 0-0.  31 games to go.  A BIG EAST championship awaits.  Let's get them while we're still here.  Ready...Go!

The University at Albany currently has many names...State University of New York at Albany, University at Albany, State University of New York, SUNY Albany, and UAlbany.  Notice one of those doesn't even say Albany in it?  That's because Albany is the flagship campus of the SUNY system.  These were not always the school's names though.  In fact, when the school was founded in 1844 it was known as the State Normal School.  It later went on to become the New York State Normal College, the New York State College for Teachers, State University of New York College of Education at Albany, State University College at Albany, and finally to one of the five different names of which it is currently known.  For the remainder of this post, we shall refer to the university as...Albany.

The Great Danes, as they are known in athletics, are actually a member of three separate conferences.  They are part of the America East conference in 17 sports, the Northeast Conference (NEC) for football, and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) for women's golf...where they have won the MAAC women's golf conference title three times (2004, 2008, 2009).  The men's basketball team has won it's conference, the America East, twice.  The first time was in 2006, earning the school and the SUNY system its first NCAA tournament bid.  The Great Danes won the conference again in 2007.  Since then, the team has not finished better than .500 (16-16 last season).

Looking at the list of notable alumni, there aren't many names that jump right out at you.  However, there are some interesting people, such as Norman E. Snyder (co-founder of SoBe), Christian Penny (founder and CEO of Medieval Times), Jamie Gold (2006 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion), and D. B. Woodside (played Principal Wood in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and President Wayne Palmer in 24).
